Carpenter’s Shelter Redevelopment


The Carpenter’s Shelter project is a partnership between two Alexandria non-profits, the Alexandria Housing Development Corporation (AHDC) and Carpenter’s Shelter, to redevelop the Shelter’s existing site to provide more housing options that are affordable to Alexandria residents at a variety of income levels. 

The nearly one acre site is located at 930 North Henry Street, within a quarter mile of the Braddock Metro Station. AHDC’s concept proposes a new, shelter facility on the ground level, including associated case management and administrative and services space, topped with 97 units of rental housing to be owned and managed by AHDC.  The apartments will be affordable to households with incomes ranging from 40% to 60% of the area median income, with ten of these units available to formerly homeless individuals who would continue to receive services from Carpenter’s Shelter.

The Gateway at King and Beauregard

The-Gateway-at-King-and-BeauregardAHDC is the contract purchaser of the development rights for 74 units within the King and Beauregard Gateway mixed use development. AHDC’s project is part of much larger mixed development that includes 352 rental units (including AHDC’s 74 affordable units), a Harris Teeter grocery store, and retail & office space. The entire project will top a two level underground parking garage with over 800 parking spaces, 44 of which will be reserved for AHDC’s Affordable Housing project. In addition, the entire project will include a new bus rapid transit (BRT) station that will be part of the West End Transitway the City of Alexandria has been working over the past several years.
